He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say to the LORD, “My refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”
For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler
and from the deadly pestilence.
He will cover you with his pinions,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.
You will not fear the terror of the night,
nor the arrow that flies by day,
nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness,
nor the destruction that wastes at noonday.
Psalm 91:1-6
I have meditated on this passage this week. I’ve been battling judgement, unsettledness, and discontentment. I assume the devil thought the weeks before my sister’s wedding would be a good time to disturb me. But these verses have brought me peace and security in the midst of fighting destructive thoughts. I have come away with this truth:
God will rescue me from a destructive plague, even one of my own making.
Judgement is like a poisonous mud puddle, and not a fun one. When I catch myself wading in, my first human instinct is to sit down and make sure my face is covered too, because I need to be punished, right?
Not how God works, or wants us to work. If judgement is mud that we smear on ourselves, the only way to be clean again is to wash in the water of righteousness. God is a fountain that can scrub away the darkest stains. And He’s delighted to do it, because we have the ultimate party to get ready for.
We must let God rescue us from the snare and the plague, even if they come because we let them. Because of Him we need not fear the terror of night, or the evil thoughts that lurk in our own hearts. Praise His Name forever!
