I’m happy to welcome my sister Shannon King today. Shannon and her husband Rich own #FahnestockHouse, a stunning Victorian home they’ve restored. Sheri Yutzy: Hi Shannon, welcome to Made to Create! I’m excited to learn more about your designing process. Do you use your photography skills to help you design a room?
Shannon: I think I probably use my composition skills, finding the right proportions, etc… I’ve never really thought about it that way, it’s kind of second nature to me now… 🙂
SY: I love when art is second nature. 😉 Do you ever struggle to find just the right piece to finish a room?
Shannon: All the time. I am a slow designer. For my own home, it is very important to me that pieces have meaning and emotion. Sometimes it takes a really long time to find those things. For our rental properties I’m not quite as picky, but still strive to find good solid pieces that convey meaning and are unique.
SY: What’s your favorite piece of all time? Where did you find it?
Shannon: My favorite pieces are probably auction finds, I have a beat up Danish leather chair that’s probably my favorite. It’s super comfy and very well made. I scored it for $100. New it was probably at least $1200.
SY: Nice. What do you do to find inspiration?
Shannon: I find inspiration through travel, auctions, stores, Instagram, walking around my city, sometimes even nature. It’s everywhere.
SY: What does designing a room or house teach you about God’s creative nature?
Shannon: That beauty is good. Simplicity is good. Quality is good. Slow is just fine. 😉 Through the restoration of Fahnestock House I have really learned to appreciate patience and the process of restoration. Being a part of God’s Kingdom and partnering in restoring the world to him is a privilege.
SY: I love that tie between restoring your house and restoring the world. What’s the most fulfilling part of your craft?
Shannon: When I finally find the one thing that pulls the room together and I know it’s “the thing”.
SY: The moment that makes it worth it. This has been fascinating. Thanks for being here and sharing your story!
