COLLECTOR OF DREAMS – #flashfictionmagic
The knock came again, making the wooden door rattle on its hinges.
“Hold your goats, I’m coming,” croaked the woman as she shuffled from behind her desk. Where was her blasted walking stick? Oh yes, back in the daydream room. No time to fetch it—whoever was at the door would break something in a moment. She used the overflowing shelves along the narrow aisle to keep her balance, glass vials and empty dream balls tinkling against each other like rain on the stone steps outside.
The door creaked slowly open and she scowled at the hulking man blocking the warm moonlight, hand raised for another knock. “What could possibly be so important as to drag me out here in the middle of the night? Come back tomorrow, like everyone else.”
He pressed his hands together and bowed over them. “I do apologize, Collector. It’s urgent business, y’see.”
Her lips curled. “It better be. Out with it. I’ve a nightmare to examine.”
The man hesitated, then stepped back. “You’d better tell her, Miss.”
The Collector hissed as a girl in a white night gown peered around him. Normally she wasn’t frightened by girls, not of that size, anyway. But this wasn’t any girl.
This one’s skin was a pale grey, her whole figure glowing with ethereal light.
“What in the everlasting…” The Collector turned back to the man. “Get her back where she came from, this instant.”
He lifted his shoulders, looking bewildered. “That’s just the thing, ma’am. I haven’t got any idea where she came from.”
The Collector narrowed her eyes. “From your dream, you idiot. No one but me and the person who dreamed them can see dream folk. You’re running the risk of turning the dreamscape inside out.”
