DESERTED ISLAND – #flashfictionmagic
“Give me that.” Pop snatched for the stub of chalk but Max danced backward toward the chalkboard.
“This.” She smudged out a numeral and replaced it with another. “Have you tried this?”
Pop scowled, but his eyes were sparkling. “I’m the physicist. You’re the kid. You’re supposed to be watching.” He stabbed a finger at the desk by the window. Outside and far below their cliff island, the ocean snarled and hissed, longing to swallow them and their island whole.
Max shook off the ocean’s menace and rolled her eyes. “Like you weren’t breaking the rules of physics by fifteen.”
“That’s different.” He crossed his arms and smirked. “I was brilliant. AND I had no father to pester.”
“Pop.” She glared at him and he stepped over and ruffled her shock of russet hair. The wood floor of their lab creaked beneath them in the quiet as he stared at the amended equation over her shoulder, a sigh smoothing his smirk away. “You, on the other hand, are too bright for this world.” He kissed her forehead, then whirled toward the chalkboard and added in her solution to the rest of the equation. “Yes!”
She grinned and pumped her fist with his.
“Give the rest of us mortals a chance next time, eh?” He winked at her and she stuck out her tongue.
