ELEMENTS – #flashfictionmagic
Arius hunched over the tiny covered lantern. The wind of Bellower’s Gap made his eyes water, tasting the exposed crevice at the back of his neck.
“All right, Drio?” he shouted without turning. The narrow rock walls of the Gap’s end made leaning lines in the near distance.
From behind, his son touched his arm in response. The sachet of earth hung from Drio’s neck, beside the pouch of water. Pieces of each element meant to coax the wind to let them pass.
—We understand the work of the elements. We will not disturb their balance—the offerings said.
Where they walked two men joined end on end couldn’t touch the sides. The Bellower’s wind, sent from the Cutting Sea, built up speed behind them until it rushed out and into the open air.
If they did not please it well enough, it would cut itself in half and press in on them from both sides until they were beaten to dust.
Arius held his breath the last few steps, as much out of fear of the wind as anticipation of the sight that waited down the mountain. The reason he and Drio risked the Bellower wind every month.
And then it was there, the Elemental Plain.
The air rippled sharp orange, fierce red, shimmering blue as far as eye could see. Underneath the mossy earth tossed in waves, an ocean of loam. As they approached the moving soil, a rabbit flashed by, twisting through the fiery air as if with wings. Drio laughed and leaped onto the first wave, letting it carry him to its crest.
The elements became one here, and anything was possible.
