Jennette & Makam Part 5
I pressed my thumb to the golden thorn Jennette held and let the bead of blood drop onto the small wooden plaque. The blood spread unreasonably fast, filling the carved words and turning them maroon.
“Are you sure about this?” Makam’s deep voice in my ear made me jump.
Jennette pushed me toward the huge, empty world book braced along the wall. Its ocher leather frame gleamed with golden stitches that pricked my jacket as I pressed my shoulders where the signatures would have been.
“Too late, Makam. Her blood is sealed to the agreement.”
I swallowed and avoided Makam’s black eyes as Jennette took a needle as long as my hand and wove it over and around me, binding me to the frame. When she moved down to my knees, he pressed closer and slid his hands up my shoulders. I gasped as he leaned in, his thumbs framing my neck. “You don’t have to do this.”
Jennette grumbled as she tied off the last thread. We ignored her.
“I have to get off this world. This is the fastest way.” Was he looking at my lips?
He sighed. “Fueling a world book isn’t as easy as it sounds.”
Jennette snorted. “Better to trade a bit of your soul than be caught by the Endmen.”
I raised a brow. He sighed again. “At least tell me your real name before you go.” He leaned even closer and I held my breath.
“Maria,” I whispered.
He narrowed his eyes. “Really.”
I grinned. “Maybe.”
Jennette shoved Makam aside and his fingers brushed my cheek.
“I’ll see you on Riven,” he said.
I scowled. “You can’t follow—“ The world book slammed closed and hurled me into a vortex of star speckled night.
