THE ROSE – #flashfictionmagic
It glimmered for a moment, like a sunset bursting free of clouds to wink and glow before subsuming once again.
The light flickered again, then held steady.
The Everrose was blooming, despite all her efforts.
It’s deep scarlet petals scattered columns of light across the fields behind her house.
Somewhere, she knew sensors were jangling in guard houses, uniformed soldiers mounting their horses to gallop toward the rose.
Toward her, the one who had kept it from them all these years.
She’d given it just enough to keep it alive, hoping more would be discovered before it finally bloomed.
All the explorations to the far corners of the country had yielded nothing. As had the cuttings she’d taken.
Her Everrose was the last of the Great Flowers.
She admired its brilliant light for one long moment, letting it bring stars to her eyes. Then, when she heard hoofbeats echoing across the field, glimpsed figures pounding toward her, she closed her hand on the blossom and pulled it free.
The Everrose’s power burned her skin for an endless moment, and then it understood the unspoken longing within her.
The Rose enveloped her, carrying her back in time to another garden, one full of light.
