MASK – #flashfictionmagic
“Why are you here again?”
Sweta spun at the low, gray-sounding voice. Lucas leaned against the doorway to the mask exhibit, hands slung into pockets, eyelids half closed.
She turned back to the jade and burnished gold of the masks. The evening light cast weird shadows from the windows on either side of the wall of masks.
“I already told you they won’t do anything for you.”
Ignoring his words, she caught again that edge of…unease in his voice. Perhaps it was justified. The masks had only a red velvet rope keeping her from touching them. The undulating mist that only she could see, apparently, softened their edges and made them seem to glow.
“I’ve heard they let one travel through time,” she murmured.
He snorted. “Not true.”
Sweta stepped closer, her hand outstretched, ready to prove him wrong. A chill sank cold fingers into her right shoulder. She frowned at Lucas, but he wasn’t there. He was beside her, his arm stretched out to touch…her shoulder. His fingers vanished where they met the fabric of her jacket.
“Lucas?” she whispered.
“I touched one last year.” His voice sounded more grey than ever. A whisper of sound, as soft as mist. “They don’t let you travel through time, they pin you here, in this one.”
