The grey downpour crept in at the edges of my vision, conjuring shapes that vanished when I looked at them directly. I stood at the east facing window of the house library, my fingers fanned against the windowsill as if in thought.
He couldn’t see my white knuckles.
“Come back to the fire, Cecilia. You’ll catch a draft there.”
I shifted toward him as if to obey, but my eyes remained on the rain outside.
He sighed and my brain deciphered the sound, detecting an acceptable level of impatience mingled with fondness.
Fondness I worked to maintain. My life depended on it.
“I will never understand your obsession with rain, my dear.”
I murmured something about its refreshing qualities. Mutterings died on my lips as a red light flashed across the hill. Once, twice, thrice, a pause. Twice more.
My lungs emptied in a slow stream, relief leaking into my joints.
My sister was still alive and well. Her captor always took a walk in the rain, leaving her free to signal me.
I settled into my chair by the hearth, keeping my gaze downcast so he wouldn’t see anything but subservience.
“That’s better.” He nudged the checkerboard table between us. “It’s your turn, my dear.”
My eyes caught on his long, taloned fingers. Clean and filed now, I knew how his talons looked with blood beneath them—my blood and others’.
I pretended to be pondering my next move, but in my mind I saw my sister gathering supplies little by little. The next heavy rain, she would come for me.
And we would leave this haunted hill forever.

#flashfictionmagic -A POND IN THE WOODS Part two: #flashfictionmagic -A POND IN THE WOODS
Part two:
Lise bit down on a squeal of pain as Jack’s boot heel came down on her toes. “Get off,” she hissed.
“What?”
She shoved and he lurched forward, nearly tumbling out into the open. He braced one hand on the damp, mossy boulder they hid behind and glared back at her. “They could have seen me!”
She thinned her eyes and shrugged. “You’d think of something, wouldn’t you?”
He hmphed like an old, crotchety lady and turned back to spy on the trio of men in black.
Lise considered shoving him again, if only to get him out of the way so she could finally see. But then the men would scatter and their mission today would fail. She curled her lip at Jack’s camouflage-clad shoulders instead. Why had she found him attractive before? He’d been nothing but condescending ever since she joined him and her brother on this mission.
You stay here, Lise. It’s too dangerous. Set that down, Lise. It’s too heavy. Cook us some supper, Lise. You ought to know how.
As if she joined the mission to cook!
A giant splash echoed through the trees and she started, following Jack into a crouch. The new view showed two men bending over the small pond, their hands held out. Where was the third?
Her gaze landed on the long ripples spreading across the opaque water.
Long enough for a body?
“Did they…”
He nodded, jaw grim. “We need to get closer once they leave.”
Her heart thudded. “Do I finally get to be useful?”
“You’re more than useful.” Jack quirked his mouth and hers went dry, much to her irritation. “They’re leaving,” he muttered. “Move quickly once they’re out of sight.”
Lise let her gift seep over her skin, until she looked like nothing more than a vapor over the forest floor.

Today’s a rainy day, so I finally got these old Today’s a rainy day, so I finally got these old beauties wiped down. These are the same chairs I grew up cleaning, and it feels like a full circle.♥️ I definitely enjoy it more these days though.😅 it’s one of those jobs that I like doing, but takes a while, so it doesn’t get done often.
What’s a task you like but don’t do often?

“Some fears are like droughts That roll in over “Some fears are like droughts
That roll in over mountains
Stripping the earth
Of the lush green and soft soil
That once promised
Fruitful life,
Sending your tired eyes searching
For hope
In what has become
The most hopeless place.

But it is in these desperately barren landscapes
You come to learn:
This Glorious Living Water
Running wild through your veins
Is entirely
Unafraid
Of the dry, scorched place of your fears.

So take heart when fear is raging.
Seek courage over control.
Learn to let go into the wild of things,
Learn to grow as things unfold.”
