#flashfictionmagic – APRIL SHOWERS BRING…
The grey downpour crept in at the edges of my vision, conjuring shapes that vanished when I looked at them directly. I stood at the east facing window of the house library, my fingers fanned against the windowsill as if in thought.
He couldn’t see my white knuckles.
“Come back to the fire, Cecilia. You’ll catch a draft there.”
I shifted toward him as if to obey, but my eyes remained on the rain outside.
He sighed and my brain deciphered the sound, detecting an acceptable level of impatience mingled with fondness.
Fondness I worked to maintain. My life depended on it.
“I will never understand your obsession with rain, my dear.”
I murmured something about its refreshing qualities. Mutterings died on my lips as a red light flashed across the hill. Once, twice, thrice, a pause. Twice more.
My lungs emptied in a slow stream, relief leaking into my joints.
My sister was still alive and well. Her captor always took a walk in the rain, leaving her free to signal me.
I settled into my chair by the hearth, keeping my gaze downcast so he wouldn’t see anything but subservience.
“That’s better.” He nudged the checkerboard table between us. “It’s your turn, my dear.”
My eyes caught on his long, taloned fingers. Clean and filed now, I knew how his talons looked with blood beneath them—my blood and others’.
I pretended to be pondering my next move, but in my mind I saw my sister gathering supplies little by little. The next heavy rain, she would come for me.
And we would leave this haunted hill forever.
